The Way Home

I was on my way home! I woke at 4AM with excitement! But also with a little apprehension, as I was going to catch the 5AM S-Bahn (public transportation) to the airport. I thought at that time of the day, the ONLY people who would be on the train would be dangerous looking characters or drunk men–I have seen enough of them harrassing women on the S-Bahn in the last two weeks. How surprised I was when the train pulled up and it was FULL! Full of young people coming and going from Discos and bars after a Friday night on the town. All through Hamburg (I rode the train from one end to the other) we gathered and disbursed these older teenagers and twenty some year olds. Back in the 1980’s we told students about Jesus by doing pantomime in the parks–I am beginning to think that 5AM on the train might be a very good place to be doing some chatting about Jesus.

Hamburg:

Hello Friends,
The picture on this website describes my life right now very well. I have been traveling on the S-Bahn (train) system in Hamburg into the city and home again at least once a day, sometimes twice, in order to interview people in the Elim Church. One could write a PhD thesis on the experiences of traveling the S-Bahn–here it is possible to find the complete spectrum of people, problems, and pain. Prim old ladies in their woolen suits sitting next to alcoholics, young teenage kids dressed up for a night on the town trying to figure out how to address the loud, handicapped person next to them, sexuality displayed for all to see. This evening I sat across from a young boy whose eyes betrayed drug usage, whose clothes revealed a well to do home but hopelessness oozed from his person. I am once again reminded of why we were called to Germany so many years ago to begin ministry in this country.
Thanks for your prayers!

Back from Bishkek

John and I arrived back from Central Asia yesterday. What an experience that is with the rugged mountains, the wonderful varieties of people groups, and the warm reception by the folks on the old Silk Road. Today we are washing and packing for the next travels. John leaves for the States tomorrow for six weeks of itineration and I am off to Germany to reconnect with SFC groups and continue research in three churches in Dresden and Hamburg.
